Centenary University Holds Summer Culture and Language Program

Centenary University will again conduct its annual intensive Summer Culture and Language Program for international students to study American culture and the English language. This program is open to all international college students and high school students who will be attending college/university in the United States, or who are interested in just attending a summer program.

From July 8 through August 18, 2017, roughly 25 students from China and South Korea will attend this year’s Summer Culture and Language Program. Eight of the summer students will remain at Centenary for the 2017-2018 academic year. A number of the students will be attending from Centenary’s university partner institutions in China and South Korea, such as Dongduk Women’s University, Ewha Woman’s University, Hoseo University, Korea University and Yongin University (Korea), and from Humber College (Canada).

“Centenary has offered this program for close to 20 years,” says Lauren Lesce, ESL Instructor and Tutor. “It is designed to introduce our students to American culture and develop their English language skills through immersion. We are looking forward to welcoming our students to Centenary.”

A large part of this program is out-of-class projects including mock job interview sessions where students learn about the art of interviewing by participating in an interview situation with career experts, local human resources representatives and Centenary University faculty and staff. Students also learn about the Hackettstown community and surrounding areas, as well as engage in cultural and educational trips to Washington, D.C., Boston, New York City and Philadelphia, where they will have the opportunity to see America’s pastime in the form of a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game.

To provide these students with the best support, Centenary intercultural resident directors and assistants assigned to work with these students are required to participate in a seven day intensive orientation to the program, which includes intercultural sensitivity and cultural understanding. On the academic side, the students participate in an English language enrichment program, take a four-credit Intensive English as a Second Language reading, writing and pronunciation class, and a four-credit American Culture class.
